At Alexander Greek School, we believe that learning Greek goes far beyond the classroom. While our language lessons lay the foundation, it’s the cultural immersion that truly sets us apart. This is why our carefully curated weekly after-class activities are an essential and integral part of our programs. These activities allow students to step into the heart of Greek culture, history, and lifestyle, making their learning experience truly unforgettable.

What makes us unique is our holistic approach: we don’t just teach the Greek language — we bring Greece to life. Through these activities, our students immerse themselves in Greek traditions, connect with one another, and practice their language skills in real-life scenarios. Whether you’re here for two weeks or twelve, these experiences help solidify your understanding of Greek culture while creating cherished memories.

Why Our Activities Are Vital

  1. Cultural Context: Language and culture are inseparable. By participating in our activities, students gain a deeper understanding of Greece’s rich history, traditions, and way of life, which enhances their ability to communicate meaningfully in Greek.
  2. Language Practice: Our activities offer students plenty of opportunities to practice their Greek in a relaxed, real-world setting — from ordering food at a Greek taverna to asking questions at a museum.
  3. Building Community: These shared experiences bring students together, fostering a sense of community. Many friendships begin over a meal, a film, or a dance class.
  4. Seasonal Customization: Our activities adapt to Greece’s vibrant calendar of seasonal and cultural events, such as Christmas, Tsiknopempti (Carnival), Easter, National Holidays, and more. This makes every activity unique and exciting, no matter when you attend.
  5. Free of Charge: We are proud to offer all activities free of charge, as we believe they are an indispensable part of your learning journey with us.

The Activities

Our activities, which take place three times per week, follow a regular structure with different themes to ensure a rich and varied experience. A student attending for two weeks can enjoy a taste of all activities, while longer stays offer even more variety. Here’s a closer look at what we offer:

  1. Cultural Presentation
A deep dive into different aspects of Greek culture, such as history, music, diet, or traditions. Each presentation is carefully prepared to provide insights into Greek life and often focuses on specific topics.

  2. Museum Visit
Explore Greece’s world-class museums with a special guided tour tailored to our students. Each tour reveals fascinating insights about Greek art, history, and archaeology.

  3. Greek Film Presentation & Screening
Experience Greek reality through cinema. We screen carefully selected Greek films (with English subtitles) that showcase Greece’s history, culture, or contemporary life. These screenings make it easy for students to follow along, no matter their language level.

  4. Eat Like a Greek
Enjoy an authentic Greek dining experience at a picturesque Athenian taverna or a locals’ favorite spot. This activity offers more than just delicious food — it’s an opportunity to connect with fellow students, practice Greek conversation, and learn about Greek dining customs, from sharing dishes to choosing traditional drinks.

  5. Greek Dance Lesson
Learn to dance like a Greek! Students are introduced to traditional Greek dances from across the country, as well as modern ones. Each lesson includes a brief theoretical introduction to the origins and meaning of the dances, followed by step-by-step practice. By the end of the course, students will have mastered an entire choreography, ready to dance anywhere!
